Moir Family Bursary

Awarded to a full-time undergraduate student entering Lakehead University in any program on the basis of financial need. Preference will be given to students who attended high school in either the Thunder Bay or Dryden Districts. The recipient must have active volunteer experience and preference will be given to those demonstrating sacrifice for family.

Dr. Adam Moir started this bursary to recognize the contributions of his younger brother, Justin Moir. Over 20 years ago, Justin stepped forward and donated 2/3 of his liver as part of a living donor program. This act saved Adam’s life as he had been struggling with an autoimmune liver disease for many years. Justin was selfless in this act, and that gift allowed Adam to finish medical school and work as a family and emergency physician in northern Ontario.

Adam has always been a proud alumnus of Lakehead University, attending the school for an Honours degree in Biology, a teaching degree, and later attending the charter class of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. Adam met his wife Nancy at Lakehead and hope that their children will consider attending university in Thunder Bay when the time comes. “Reflecting on the time there all the things that I am most proud of happened at Lakehead. Whether that was meeting my wife, the family that has come from that union and being able to complete my medical degree in my hometown” Moir writes.

He received several awards upon graduating from high school, most notably the Alumni Award. Adam’s mother, Laurel, returned to school as an adult learner and earned her teaching degree. Grateful for this financial help as a teenager, he has always intended to give back, and is proud to honour his brother in creating this award. Dr. Moir notes “If not for my brother’s humility, this would be called the Justin Moir award, but he would not permit that type of recognition.”
