Krishna Kumari Tummala Puttagunta Lakehead University 30th Anniversary Bursary
Established in perpetuity in 1996 by Dr. Veugopala Rao Puttagunta, Professor of Chemical Engineering at Lakehead University since 1986, in recognition of his wife, Krishna and her dedication to the pursuit of knowledge. As a young girl born in a rural south Indian rice farming village, Krishna was denied an education, as so many girls were at that time, a practice that continues to this day. Even from a very young age, Krishna understood that a proper education was the key to escaping her impecunious circumstances and, though she had a burning desire to be educated, the most she was permitted was to marry an educated boy. As a full time mother, she persevered and succeeded in her desire to graduate high school. Once their finances stabilized, she and her husband established this scholarship and others in India, to assist those students requiring financial assistance to pursue their own educational aspirations to benefit their families and society. Awarded annually to a deserving in-course student registered in any discipline with a minimum B standing.
