The Himmelman Family Bursary
Awarded to an in-course student with a *major in Women’s Studies or taking, or have taken Women’s Studies courses, on the basis of financial need. At the time of application, the student must be approved for OSAP; be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person; and be a resident of Ontario for a minimum of 12 months in a row.
Created in 1999 by Joy Himmelman who was at that time the Director of Student Services and her father, Laurence Himmelman. Joy and Laurence believe strongly in the power of education. Joy started at Lakehead University in 1985 and left in 2000. She later returned to Lakehead (2013-2016) working in a variety of roles with the Student Success Centre, including Acting Director and Acting Coordinator during which time she relaunched the Student Ambassador Program.
Also in 2016, the Alumni Association of Lakehead University presented Joy with an Honorary Membership. This award, given at the discretion of the Board of Directors, is the highest honour that the Association can bestow upon a non-graduate of Lakehead University. It is in recognition of her significant efforts on behalf of, and contribution to, the success and advancement of Lakehead University. Particularly recognizing the tremendous impact Joy has had upon our alumni when they were students.
