Arthur and Ruth Kajander Merit Award Scholarship Trust

Created in 1998 by the Arthur and Ruth Kajander family. Awarded to an in-course undergraduate student. Priority will be given to students with an overall average of 85% or above. Applicants will be considered on the basis of academic excellence in Math and Science, demonstrated leadership and social responsibility, and an appreciation for the impact of a well rounded liberal education on an individual’s quality of life and personal development. Financial need will be considered. In general, applicants will be selected based on academic achievement, civic mindedness and their ability to communicate these attributes effectively both orally and in writing. An interview will be required for short-listed candidates. The student must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant of Canada and must have lived in Ontario for at least twelve consecutive months. The recipient will be registered through the Thunder Bay Campus, and be a resident of Northwestern Ontario. A special Arthur and Ruth Kajander Award of Merit Application is required containing the following:

1. AN UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT OF ALL POST-SECONDARY STUDIES. Applicant must have completed one (1) full academic year of studies at Lakehead University.

2. A letter of application addressing your outstanding academic achievement in Math and Science, activities involving leadership and social responsibility, and your financial need. Your letter should also illustrate your intellectual curiosity and ability through examples of interest in literature and a variety of scientific, social and athletic pursuits.

3. A two-page, double spaced response to the following: How has a particular literary work influenced your personal perspective and aspirations? This letter should also demonstrate your excellence in English.

4. Two letters of support: one from a University faculty member and one from a person in the community (not family member).
