Murray Fleming Memorial Silver Jubilee Scholarship
Established in memory of J. Murray Fleming in 1988 by his family and friends in recognition of his connection to Lakehead University. In 2022 the J. Murray Fleming Engineering Scholarship (est. 1973) was combined with the Silver Jubilee Award. A civil engineer, Murray came to Thunder Bay (then Port Arthur) in 1924 when he joined C.D. Howe Co Ltd and became President in 1935. Murray oversaw numerous high-profile projects before ultimately retiring in 1975. The company designed many grain elevators from coast to coast and beyond. A strong believer in the value of post-secondary education, Murray volunteered on the Board of Governors of Lakehead University even serving as Board Chair. In 1975 he was recognized for his years of support, as well as his contributions to the field of engineering, by being awarded an Honorary Degree in Engineering.
