Shirley (Ricketts) Symington Memorial Nursing Award
Shirley Symington trained as a nurse at Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario and earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Western Ontario with the help of a bursary. She never forgot the value of that bursary in assisting her in a lifelong career in nursing (with time off to raise a family). She engaged in many facets of nursing – home visiting, hospital care, teaching and public health, all performed with a great deal of competence and compassion. Shirley strongly believed that it was important to “pass it on” and this Memorial Fund is intended to do that by assisting others establish careers in nursing. It also reflects her enduring love of international travel. Established in 2018 by James Symington, in memory of his wife Arline “Shirley” Symington. Awarded to a 4th year nursing student to assist with travel costs associated with International Clinical Placement. The student must meet the program criteria in their previous year, and will be selected upon the recommendation of the School of Nursing. Recipients will have demonstrated financial need and will be from Northwestern Ontario.
