Dennis Smyk Memorial Bursary

Established in 2022 by his son, Peter (HBA’09), other family and friends, in memory of Dennis Smyk, who attended Lakehead Teacher’s College, the precursor to Lakehead University. Dennis was a lifelong resident of Northwestern Ontario and contributed in many ways including through his newspaper, Ignace Driftwood (1978-2018), as well as his 50 years of volunteer service with numerous organizations. In 2013, Dennis received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition for his volunteerism and the museum in Ignace was renamed the Dennis Smyk Heritage Centre.

Awarded to a full-time student who has graduated from a high school in Northwestern Ontario enrolled in the Faculty of Education or Anthropology based on financial need.
