Peggy Tripp Memorial Women's Studies Student Award

Dr. Peggy Tripp: Professor of Biology and Women’s Studies (September 14, 1948 – September 20, 2008). A faculty member at Lakehead University from 1980-2008, Dr.Tripp served as a Professor of Biology in the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies and as a Professor of Women’s Studies in the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities. Dr. Tripp influenced countless students through her teaching on Ecofeminism, Women and Science, Environmental Ethics, and the Forest, Science Under Scrutiny, and Genetics. She received the Lakehead University Distinguished instructor award in 1990. From 1980 to 1992, Dr. Tripp directed her scholarly work to feminist science critique and ecofeminism as a result of an increasing awareness of a contradiction between her scientific research and her social/environmental conscience. This transition was documented in the 1996 NFB/Discovery Channel Video “Asking Different Questions: Women in Science.” In addition to being a much loved teacher, scholar, and master gardener, Dr. Tripp was a longstanding member of the Lakehead Unitarian Fellowship and devoted considerable time and energy as an activist in the women’s and feminist communities.
Awarded to a third or fourth year student with a minimum B average who displays exemplary community involvement in areas of women’s issues, social justice and/or environmental issues.
