The Ronald J.K. Martin Award

Ronald John Ker Martin (1929-2016) never had the chance to go to university, instead heading to work in the insurance business and building a successful career. He wanted his children to have the opportunities he did not and ensured that they had the opportunity to pursue higher post-secondary education. He encouraged his daughter (Deborah Martin-Downs) to pursue graduate degrees and would have been so proud to have seen her receive an Honorary PhD from Lakehead University in 2018 in recognition of her work in the environmental field. This award is being provided by Ronald’s wife and daughter to support and encourage the next generation of environmental specialists. Awarded to one full-time undergraduate student in any year of study in an environmental science discipline on the basis of financial need and satisfactory academic achievement. Preference will be given to a student who has been involved with extra-curricular activities and a demonstrated passion for environmental advocacy. To be eligible, the applicant must (i) be a Canadian Citizen; and (ii) have a minimum 80% average or higher.
