Dr. Darlene M. Steven Scholarship in Nursing

Dr. Darlene M. Steven, RN, earned her Diploma in Public Health from the University of Manitoba in 1970, her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) from Lakehead University in 1977, and her Master in Health Services Administration and Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Administration from the University of Alberta in 1980 and 1988 respectively. Darlene held various roles in the health care sector: a public health nurse, a staff nurse, as well as many senior administrative positions in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. She completed both of her graduate degrees while employed in the health care profession. Darlene joined the faculty in the School of Nursing at Lakehead University in 1988 where she was the first Ph.D. degree holder in the school at the time and became a Full Professor in 2001. From 2001 to 2013, she also held an Adjunct Professor Appointment at Laurentian University, School of Nursing. During her tenure at Lakehead University, spanning over twenty five years, Darlene taught various courses including nursing leadership and nursing research. She conducted research in many areas such as heart disease, breast cancer, multiple sclerosis, and health issues in women. Darlene was also actively involved in the community where she served as Chair of the Hearts for Life Committee, as a member of the Board of Directors for Cancer Research Ontario, and as Chair of NWO Breast Screening Program Advisory Committee. She also served on numerous university committees and was instrumental in the development and implementation of the MPH program. During her career, Darlene received many awards including the Lakehead University Distinguished Instructor Award; a Certificate of Merit from the Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation (OCTRF) Board Member (awarded by the Minister of Health); a Certificate of Merit from the NWO Breast Screening Program for development and implementation of the mobile van; the OPAS Award for Excellence in Teaching and Advanced Technology Master’s of Public Health from the Council of Ontario Universities; the Innovation Award from Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and Lakehead University for the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program via teleconferencing; and she was proud to have her name listed several times in the Who’s is Who publications. Darlene was passionate about nursing education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. She always took the time to assist and mentor her students to achieve their goals and aspirations. The scholarship was established in 2015 by her spouse, Dr. Sabah Y. Mansour, to honor Darlene’s outstanding and distinguished service to her profession, to her students and her community.
To be awarded to a full time fourth year student enrolled in the school of Nursing on the basis of high academic standing and demonstrated leadership skills. The recipient will be determined on the recommendation of the School of Nursing Scholarship and Awards Committee.
