Dr. Sabah Y. Mansour Scholarship in Electrical Engineering

Dr. Sabah Y. Mansour (1942-2021) obtained his BEng at the University of Liverpool in 1967, a MEng at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1980 and a PhD at the University of Alberta in 1985, all in Electrical Engineering field. Dr. Mansour joined Lakehead University in 1988 and was tenured to the position of Associate Professor in 1991. His main area of research focused on power systems, and in particular, on load flow computations and real-time power system state estimation.
Dr. Mansour served as Chair of the Electrical Engineering program from 1995 to 2013. His leadership and student focus were key characteristics in maintaining a high-quality educational experience for the students, while administratively and pedagogically strengthening the program. He oversaw the transformational change from the department providing a theoretical focused mission to a new and more balanced approach of theoretical learning and applied research.
He remained a dedicated instructor throughout his years at Lakehead. He insisted on always remaining connected to the students. One of his many passions included the bridging program, which helped aspiring College students access Lakehead University Mathematics, a pathway to the Engineering Degree program. He particularly enjoyed the camaraderie of these students, as they participated in their Lakehead education in engineering.
Dr. Mansour is fondly remembered by many graduates of the electrical engineering program. He was well regarded as a caring and compassionate professor. He was often sought out by students, colleagues and administrators for his considerate advice and guidance. For these selfless acts, he was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus upon his retirement. Additionally, Dr. Mansour significantly contributed to the Department in developing new graduate programs in Control Engineering (an interdisciplinary MSc), as well as the MSc in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) that formed the foundation of the PhD program in ECE. These programs have significantly contributed to Lakehead University’s positive reputation in the academic field of Engineering, which attracts students both nationally and internationally. Dr. Mansour will be sorely missed.
